Why you’ll love this recipe:

If you’re looking for rainbow treats for a party, or healthy and delicious desserts for kids’ birthday party, YOU’RE in the right place!!

This cheerful rainbow smoothie is fun, easy and impressive!

  • Guaranteed to bring party mood!!
  • Jam-packed with immune-boosting vitamins.

The fun part about layered smoothies is you can taste each fruit layer. First blueberry, then kiwi, pineapple, orange, and strawberry too!

5 bowls of smoothie ingredients.

Ingredient Notes:

I made this easy but fancy smoothie with five bright and fruity layers!

  • Purple layer: Blueberries and blackberries are rich in antioxidants and a vibrant shade of blue! Greek yogurt adds protein and a creamy texture!
  • Green layer: Rainbow smoothies are a sweet way to eat your greens! Spinach is rich in iron, vitamin E, and magnesium for a healthy immune system. You won’t taste the spinach though! It makes a bright green layer without any grassy taste! Kiwi is totally optional. Be sure to use nice and ripe kiwi, or you may end up with bitter smoothie. A little bit of banana is a natural sweetener of this layer and greek yogurt adds creaminess.
  • Yellow layer: Mix any yellow fruits, like pineapples and mangoes, with some banana and Greek yogurt for vibrant yellow layer!
  • Orange layer: This feel-good layer of banana and oranges packs in Vitamin C and blends into a sunny orange color! Yes, please! The secret to bright orange color is adding couple of raspberries!
  • Red layer: Raspberries and strawberries with a touch of pineapple juice makes the perfect final layer. I don’t add yogurt and banana in this layer to preserve the bright red color.

How to make this recipe:

  1. Divide the ingredients for each layer into five separate bowls.
  2. Then blend each smoothie layer and pour it back into its small bowl. Rinse the blender after each layer.
  3. Carefully spoon each smoothie layer into a glass.
  4. Repeat with the green layer, then the yellow, orange, and red layer.
Step by step photos of making rainbow smoothie layers.

Tip

Spoon the smoothie and gently drop each spoonful starting around the edges. If you pour the smoothies into the glass, you won’t get clean layers!

2 tall glasses of rainbow smoothies.

Tips for Success:

  • Frozen fruits work just as great as fresh ones. You’ll get nice and thick texture with frozen fruits.
  • Feel free to swap the fruit if you like. Just remember the color of the smoothie will depend on the color of the fruit.
  • Prep the ingredients in separate bowls before you begin to blend the layers. The process goes smoother that way.
  • Secret to perfect orange layer: 1-2 raspberries might seem silly, but it makes the orange layer brighter!
  • Be sure to rinse the blender between layers.
  • For clean and perfect layers, spoon the mixture into the glass instead of pouring!
  • For a fun birthday treat, top with whipped cream and sprinkles. Kids love it! Also, for kids’ birthday party, these plastic cups work perfectly!
Rainbow popsicles over crushed ice.

Storing Tips:

  • Store any leftover smoothie in the refrigerator for 1-2 days, but the colorful layers won’t stay intact. It’ll still taste delicious!
  • Leftover smoothies can be frozen too! Simply pour the mixture into an airtight freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Once ready to use, place the frozen smoothie back into the blender and blend with additional milk.
  • You can also make it into rainbow popsicles!! Simply layer the smoothies into a popsicle mold and freeze.

FAQs:

Can I put food coloring in smoothies?

Yes, but it’s not necessary! The bright shades of fruit and berries color the smoothie naturally. If you want a deep, dark red, try adding beetroot powder or frozen cherries. For a bright green, add spinach or leafy greens.

What type of yogurt is best for smoothies?

Greek yogurt works great in smoothies! It has a thick, creamy texture and plenty of high-quality protein!

Can I make this smoothie dairy-free?

Yes, just substitute dairy-free yogurt in place of greek yogurt.

How do you thicken smoothies?

The best way to thicken a smoothie is with frozen fruit or greek yogurt. This results in a creamy yet thick texture, without small bits of ice!

Ingredients

Purple layer:

  • ¼ cup blackberries Note 1
  • ¼ cup blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt Note 2

Green layer:

  • 1 kiwi
  • ½ banana
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
  • A small handful of spinach

Yellow layer:

  • 1 mango
  • ½ banana
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt

Orange layer:

  • 1 orange
  • ½ banana
  • 3 raspberry

Red layer:

  • ½ cup raspberries
  • 2-3 strawberries
  • ¼ cup pineapple juice Note 3
Note: I test all my recipes with both measurements for the most precise and accurate result!

Instructions

  • Blend the ingredients for each layer separately in a blender, rinsing the blender between each layer.
  • To beautifully layer the smoothie, carefully spoon the mixture into a glass starting from the edges. And by that I mean you want small spoonfuls dropped gently in the circle.
  • Divide the ingredients for each layer into five separate bowls.
  • Then blend each smoothie layer and pour it back into its small bowl. Rinse the blender after each layer.
  • Spoon the purple smoothie and gently drop each spoonful, starting around the edges. If you pour the smoothies into the glass, you won't get clean layers!
  • Repeat with the green, then yellow, orange, and red layers.

Tips & Notes:

Note 1: You may use fresh or frozen fruits. Frozen fruits make nice and thick smoothie.
Note 2: Substitute dairy-free yogurt to make this smoothie dairy-free & vegan!
Note 3: Substitute any juice, or coconut water or even plain water for pineapple juice to thin out thick smoothie. I used canned pineapple juice.
Storing Tips:
–
Store any leftover smoothie in the refrigerator for 1-2 days, but the colorful layers won’t stay intact. It will still taste delicious!
– Leftover smoothies can be frozen too! Simply pour the mixture into an airtight freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
– Once ready to use, place the frozen smoothie back into the blender and blend with additional milk.
– You can also turn this into rainbow popsicles. Simply layer the smoothies into a popsicle mold and freeze.
