What is slushies?

Slushies (or slushy/slushie) is a frozen blended drink made of fruit-flavored syrup.

But it’s also common to make it with real fruits blended with ice.

What do you need to make slushies?

  • Frozen fruits – I like to use frozen fruits instead of fresh fruits with ice as to not dilute the flavor. You can use whatever fruits you want.
  • Blender – A high-power blender is super helpful for crushing frozen fruits, but you don’t need anything fancy. My Ninja blender works just fine for this!

One of my favorite flavor combos is blueberry and pineapple.

  • Blueberries – I buy a bag of frozen blueberries from the freezer section. Frozen fruits are actually better because these fruits are specifically harvested for freezing at their peak ripeness!
  • Pineapple – You can also use frozen pineapple chunks, but I find canned pineapples better for making slushies, because I can use the juice instead of water! Just flash freeze pineapple rings before making the drink!

MY FAVORITE BLENDER!

I’ve been using this Ninja blender since 2013 and it’s a workhorse in my kitchen!

How to make homemade slushies:

It’s really easy to make slushies from scratch.

  1. Place frozen fruits in a blender with 1 cup of canned pineapple juice.
  2. Blend until it’s smooth, slushie-consistency. You can serve it at this point.
  3. Or pour in Sprite, or other sparkling drink of your choice!

Tip

Depending on your blender, you may need to process frozen fruits in smaller batches.

Slushie Variations:

Now, don’t stop at this basic version. You can change things up all kinds of ways!!

  • Mix in fresh herbs for a surprising twist! Fresh mint is great with watermelon, or basil with strawberries, etc.
  • Add citrus zest and juice to turn it into a lemonade slushie.
  • A little splash of booze is also not a bad idea, right? Just keep it away from little ones.

Make-Ahead Tips:

Yes, you can make slushies in advance!!

  1. I like to make a mega-batch at once, and then divide them into these baby food silicone molds, or ice cube tray, and freeze.
  2. Then transfer the frozen slushies into a freezer bag.
  3. And whenever we need to cool down, we throw in a few chunks of frozen slushies into the blender and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen blueberries
  • 1 can (20z) pineapple slices Note 1
  • 2 cups Sprite optional
Note: I test all my recipes with both measurements for the most precise and accurate result!

Instructions

  • Place frozen fruits in a blender with 1 cup of canned pineapple juice.
  • Blend until it's smooth, slushie-consistency. You can serve it at this point.
  • Or pour in Sprite, or other sparkling drink of your choice, and serve immediately.

Tips & Notes:

Note 1a: I use canned pineapples in 100% pineapple juice. I freeze the pineapple rinds in a single layer on a baking sheet. And sometimes I also freeze the pineapple juice too.
Note 1b: You can substitute frozen pineapple chunks for canned pineapples!
Note 2: You can use water in place of juice, if you’re using all frozen fruits and don’t have pineapple juice.
Make-Ahead Tips:

Love this! I’ve always got frozen fruits on hand, too – they’re such a good go-to for so many different things. I can’t wait to try this slushy! (And maybe add some vodka or champagne for the adults?!) Thanks for sharing! Stopping by from #FoodieFriDIY
