But let’s talk about applesauce today!

Simple yet delicious, it seems like applesauce is everyone’s favorite snack. You can serve it any which way, sweetened with honey, maple syrup, seasoned with cinnamon, or nutmeg. Some even add applesauce in baking in place of oil!

I’ve been working on a new dessert recipe recently and needed a real good applesauce. Not heavy sweetened kind. I needed as much apple flavor as possible! And I had turned to my trusty Instant Pot, and it didn’t disappoint!

So, since I wanted that tart apple flavor really stand out, I went with the best baking apples, Granny Smith. These green gems delivered the best tart apple flavors, and it worked beautifully in dessert recipe, which is coming soon!!

My goodness, it was sooo easy to make this “recipe”.

You don’t even need to peel them apples to make an Instant Pot applesauce. Just quarter and core before throwing them into the pot. Super easy! Or you can just blend it with a blender. But I didn’t find it necessary to use a blender, because the sauce comes out nice and smooth already.

See this plate of skins? Yeah, you can just pick them out afterwards if you don’t want to bother with peeling or blending with a blender.

While I call for Granny Smith apples in the recipe card, you choose whatever apples you want. Any combinations work great.

My little George is just getting into food now, and he couldn’t make up his mind about this tart applesauce. His facial expressions after each bite were priceless, but he wouldn’t decline a spoonful either. 🙂

This Granny Smith applesauce is still delicious to eat as is though. I love to top it with a sprinkle of cinnamon, warm spice paired beautifully with that apple tartness! You can also sweeten it with honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar, if desired.

Instant Pot Unsweetened Applesauce

This Instant Pot applesauce is the easiest way to make homemade applesauce. In this tart unsweetened applesauce, the apple flavor really shines. That’s why it makes a perfect ingredient in apple flavored desserts, like apple caramel tart.

Yield: 4 cups

Prep Time:5min

Cook Time:5min

Total Time:45min (Includes time for IP to come to pressure and NPR)

Ingredients:

  • 3.5 lbs Granny Smith apples (or any variety of apples)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼-½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional

Directions:

  1. Wash and cut the apples into quarters. Remove the seeds.
  2. Place the cored apples in the inner pot of your Instant Pot.
  3. Add water and lemon juice.
  4. Cover and make sure the valve is set to sealing.
  5. Set the Instant Pot to Pressure Cook/Manual for 5 minutes on high. (NOTE: It took about 10 minutes for my IP to come to pressure.)
  6. Let the pressure naturally release, which means just let the IP sit until the pin drops, about 25 minutes.
  7. Turn the valve to venting, and carefully open the lid.
  8. Remove the apple skins before blending everything in a blender, or using an immersion blender, until smooth.
  9. Stir in cinnamon or other sweetener, if desired.
